GK1 Walkthrough - Day 3

"Drawn to Bacchus's abode, I sought there to conspire.
But it was in the city of the dead that I found my heart's desire..."

St. George's Rare Books
Grace is already in the shop: as soon as you have drunk your coffee she'll tell you the result of the research you asked her to do last night. Unfortunately she hasn't managed to find M.me Cazaunoux's address so she'll give you instead a phonebook page with the numbers of all the Cazaunoux of New Orleans. (01, 074/342). Now read the newspaper: you'll find in the culture page that today at Tulane University there is going to be a lecture about West Africa religions. Interesting. (01, 075/342). Gabe will also read his horoscope for the day: it says

"An evil eye is upon you. Change course before it's too late." (01, 076/342).

The horoscope hates you, it's clear. Don't worry and ask Grace if there are any "messages" for you. There are: Mosely is going to interrogate a suspect in his office and thought you may enjoy it; that German guy, Wolfgang Ritter, called again, claiming he's a relative of yours (01, 077/342). Grace will give you his phone number, but before you call him you surely want to know something more about him. On the top left of his main bookshelf Gabriel has an old book of German poetry which belonged to his grandfather. Take it: you'll find out that it was written by someone called Heinz Ritter. Odd. Gabriel will read a poem he finds strangely compelling:

Drei Drachen kriechen in meinen Schlaf
die Seele wo'lln sie lebendig zum Frass
feurigen Atems, gespatener Zunge
geniessen sie jedes Mahl.

(01, 078/342). Reading through the German-English dictionary he has below the street window Gabriel will find out that "drei" means "three" and "Drachen" means "dragon". Keep this in mind. Now you can go out: your first destination for today is the Police Station, but before you go there stop by at

Jackson Square
In the north-east section of the square there is Madame Lorelei, a fortune teller. She's got a snake: this makes her immediately suspect. Since she's not too willing to give out any information about "Elvis", wait until she'll begin to dance. Then approach to her and dance with her (select the "take" icon, then click on Lorelei) (01, 079/342); while dancing she'll lose a veil: take it (01, 080/342). Use the magnifying glass on the veil to find a snake scale (02, 082/342). It surely belongs to Elvis; magnify the scale to find if it matches the one you found at crime scene: unfortunately it doesn't (01, 083/342). Now you can return the veil to its owner: approach to Madame Lorelei and chat with her asking "Did you lose a veil?" (01, 084/342). She'll be glad you found it and will read your hand for free. There is a woman in your immediate future - you already knew that without her winking at you knowingly - but suddenly the fortune teller becomes pale and runs away muttering "There are forces!". What's up with you lately? Don't let this bring you down: go rather in the north-east section of the square and chat with the artist to get the reconstruction of the pattern (01, 085/342). Now you can leave Jackson Square and see what is your detective friend up to in

Mosely's office
(02, 087/342). Mosely is interrogating Crash, a guy who seems to know something about the Voodoo murders, but the young man is scared to death, swears he doesn't know anything and refuses to cooperate. When his interrogation ends leave the Police Station

Jackson Square
If you return to its north-west section, you'll find the fortune teller is back. She looks a bit strange... and go back to Chat with her (03, 090/342): suddenly she will speak as if possessed and will shout to you "Stay away from Malia Gedde or you should pay it with your life!"; then she'll run away. That's really weird, but you have no more time to spend here: today there is a lecture on Voodoo you want to listen to at

Tulane University
(Note: you'll find the Tulane University destination icon in the NOMS)

(02, 092/342). If you find the lecture interesting, this doesn't mean that Gabe's opinion is the same: he'll fall asleep!

EASTER EGG: Guess who's coming to New Orleans?
Have a look at the notes on the display panel of the university, next to the exit door. Does the name Laura Bow Dorian remind you of anything?

When Gabriel wakes up after the end of the lecture follow the relater, professor Hartridge, through the door on the left of the stage: you'll enter in

Hartridge's Office
The professor is a Voodoo expert, so ask him about all the things you have not clear in matter of Voodoo. For instance, he surely knows what does "Cabrit sans cor" mean (01, 093/342); to stay on topic, show him the Voodoo Murders photo (02, 095/342). He seems also to be very interested in vévés, so show him the reconstruction of the crime scene pattern you got from the Jackson Square artist (02, 097/342). He'll begin to work to identify its origins, so leave him alone (he promised he'll let you know when he finds out anything) and go to visit your grandmother. She seems not to know anything about a relative of yours called Wolfgang Ritter, so try instead to look in

Grandmother Knight's Attic
During your last visit you didn't look well to granddaddy's clock: take your time to do it now. It's an old mechanic clock with a rotating circle on which are drawn some figures. Do you remember the poem you read in the morning? It was from your granddaddy's book. Among the figures drawn on the clock there is also a dragon: why not to try Drei Drachen - Three Dragons? Move the hands of the clock to reach the 3 o'clock position and move the rotating circle until the dragon is in the same position of the minute hand, then action the clock using the key on its left (05, 102/342). Well done, right now you got your first hundred points! A secret drawer will open: pick up the photograph (01, 103/342) and the letter (01, 104/342) you'll find inside. You can read the letter in your inventory, but unfortunately it's written in German (01, 105/342) There's nothing more you can do here: return downstairs.

Grandmother Knight's
Ask your Grandma about "Heinz Ritter" (02, 107/342) and about "Wolfgang Ritter" (01, 108/342): what a strange family history you have! Now that you know you can return in the bookshop and call Wolfgang Ritter, but before you do it stop by in

Dixieland Drugstore
Notice the advertisement on the desk: for all the purchases over 50$ there is a bottle of Master Gambling Oil for free (01, 109/342). Interesting. Ask Willy Walker about "Animal Masks", then about the crocodile mask named "Willy Jr." (02, 111/342). You might be interested in buying it, but you have no money. Don't worry about it and return to

St. George's Rare Books.
When in the bookshop wait patiently for some time. After a while the door will open and someone will enter: it's Bruno, the owner of an art gallery. He wants some paintings from Grace but is also fond of your father's style: try to sell to him that old dad's painting which is hanging next to Grace's desk and ask him "How much would you give me for it?". Grace will try to prevent you from doing that: chill her out with a commanding "Stay out of this, Grace.". Bruno will offer you $100. It's certainly not an awesome price, but you need the money, so say "Fine. It's yours." (2, 113/342). I know it's painful to do, but you really needed the money...
Now ask Grace to find do some research about the reconstructed "pattern" you got from the artist (02, 115/342), then enter

Gabriel's Room
You'll have to do some phone conversation and Gabriel is rather obsessed about his privacy while talking - that's why he always refuses using the bookshop phone.

Note: to use the phone you can't select the phone number in your inventory and use it on the phone. You'll have to read the number, keep it in mind and then dial it in the phone screen.

First of all call Wolfgang Ritter in Germany (02, 117/342). Well, if the game title is "Sins of the fathers" there surely is a reason. Now have a look at the phonebook page Grace gave you this morning. Of course you're searching for Madame Cazaunoux, but unfortunately she's not the only New Orleans citizen named Cazaunoux. Don't waste your time on trials: I'll tell you she's Cazaunoux A., so take the phone and call her. Unfortunately the smart old lady has understood you're not from the Dixieland Drugstore, but you now know something more about her: she has a little doggie named Castro. You surely noticed the advertisement for the Cajun Critters Veterinary Clinic on he left of the phonebook page. Have a try at it: call and ask "Do you have a Madame Cazaunoux as a client?" and then, to make less suspicious the clinic employee, say "I'm worried about Castro. He's missed three dance lessons" (02, 119/342). Well done, you've just got madame Cazaunoux's address!
It's time to visit the old lady, but as you certainly understood she doesn't
trust other people. What about a disguise? Take some hair gel from your
bathroom (01, 120/342), then leave the bookshop and head for

St. Louis Cathedral
Once you're there walk through the door on the right into the sacristy. You'll see there some clothes: borrow a white priest collar (01, 121/342) and a black shirt (01, 122/342). Now that you have all your disguise items ready go to visit Madame Cazaunoux: you will surely have noticed that a new icon has appeared on the FQMS. That is

Cazaunoux Residence

EASTER EGG: Bill Murray
Knock on the door of Cazaunoux residence without disguising yourself. When the old lady opens the door, say "Landshark!". She will tell you that you are no Bill Murray.

Once you're stepping outside the door, wear the black shirt with collar (01, 123/342) and use the hair gel to get a less rakish look (01, 124/342), then knock on the door and say "It's Father Mac Laughlin ta see ye." (01, 125/342). She'll let you get in, and you will be able to have a conversation with her. Before talking about Voodoo you will have to make her trust you, so ask her about "Cabrit Sans Cor" and when she'll ask you if you know what it means say "it means "goat without horns"" (02, 127/342). Then go ahead with the conversation talking about "Human Sacrifice", "Real Voodoo Queens" and about the "Secret Voodoo Hounfour" (01, 128/342). When you'll have done talking, she'll want you to bless a voodoo snake bracelet she has inherited in order to avoid it doing any harm to her. While blessing, use the clay from your inventory to make a mould of it (02, 130/342). You have nothing more to do here, so leave Cazaunoux Residence and go to the

Dixieland Drugstore
Do you remember Sam, the goldsmith who believes in Voodoo that plays chess (and loses) every day at Napoleon House? If you helped him you could ask him to make a bracelet copy from the mould you have, and here, with every purchase over $50 they give you a bottle of Voodoo oil for free. Give 100$ to Willy Walker to buy Willy Jr., the crocodile head: don't worry about the money, as you'll see it will come in quite handy (01, 131/342). Willy will give you in addiction also a bottle of Lady Luck Oil (01, 132/342). Now you can leave the drugstore and go to

Napoleon House
You'll find Sam still playing chess and losing. Give him the Lady Luck Oil (01, 133/342) and Gabriel will say to him "This is a powerful Voodoo oil" and "This Voodoo oil could make a NUN get lucky". Sam will trust you, and, believe it or not, will win! (02, 135/342) Now you can give him your snake bracelet mould (01, 136/342): he will promise to bring you the bracelet tomorrow. Once you're done, go to visit a place Dr. John talked you about:

St. Louis Cemetery #1
You'll find there Toussaint Gervais, the old guardian, picking up dirt and old leaves. Ask him about the "Marie Laveau" tomb (01, 137/342). He'll show it to you: it's the big one, marked with a plenty of strange signs. Ask him if there are "Other marked tombs" (01, 138/342), then approach to Marie Laveau's tomb and write down those strange marks (02, 140/342). Now go to visit your family tomb, as your granny asked you to do: it's in the third section of the cemetery, on the right.

Note: to get there you have to walk to to walk right two times, making sure the mouse cursor turns into an arrow to the right before clicking. Sometimes it's a bit tricky, so try the whole height of the screen.

It's really in the city of the dead that you found your heart's desire: the door of a big tomb will open and there she stands: Malia Gedde (02, 142/342)! After a struggling conversation, leave the cemetery: it's late and Gabriel will go home.
And in the night she will come. What a romantic ending to Day 3!
